Subject Guides: General Design Thoughts

Laurie: These are just my thoughts, but if we can all discuss them on the wiki, then we can come up with general needs for a template without having to meet. Or, we can meet if that's easier.

Components:

  • Creative Commons on each page: "Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License.
  • Design:
    • Main page with Three columns, left column=navigation; middle is content and news; right is contact information for subject specialist (so just like Merrie's page is now, but three columns since people are more familiar with that)
    • Left Column components:
      • Major departments/fields (list if at or under 5-6, otherwise have a link for all and then another page)
      • Online tutorials
        • (will include, but not on left-side link)
        • Key terms for the field
        • Searching Databases
        • Library Tutorials
        • Sample writing assignments, projects
      • Getting started
        • (will include, but not on left-side link)
        • Starting on research
        • Call number range, and how to find
      • Something field related (Methods, topic)
      • Special Stuff at UF (if applicable, stuff in Special Collections, etc.)
      • Contact
    • Right column components:
      • Subject Specialist Name
      • Picture
      • Contact info
      • Basic research info
      • Link to another page with specialist's research/teaching bio/statement--something that connects researchers and students to the specialist
    • Middle Column:
      • on first page, "About" the field and topics that whill be covered; current events/topics or new books
      • on other pages, middle has general content and the right-column may be gone or may stay and remain on every page.
    • Or, copy what LibGuides hs for top tabs and then customize the page while keeping some elements static on each page
  • Once finished, plan will be to get all departments to link to relevant guide, email all faculty in those to link to relevant guide, and email all students through the GatorTimes to promote the new guides and to ask for help in making them even better.
  • Plan could also include asking FYF or ENC to dedicate a class projectto working on them to make sure we get feedback.
