Library 2.0 Working Group

Charge Update, from January 24, 2008:

New charge is to release any and all projects ready for release and to then plan a showcase and to develop subject-based virtual library landing pages. The showcase should get patrons interested in what the Libraries have and do and what we could do. We will show any developed tools, new or old, and we will have the expo whether or not we have new services to release. This will be this spring, so March or April.

The larger part of the new charge is to develop subject-based virtual library landing and supplemental pages, working from what Peter McKay has developed for the Business Library to extend that model into versions for education, gender studies, and optionally another area. We can choose two or three if that's better, but we need to do at least two and we'll need to have drafts done by early March for director and Collection Management review.

Background and Charge: The Library 2.0 Working Group is charged with identifying and supporting knowledge discovery and exchange through social networks in the Web 2.0 environment. Acknowledging that the online catalog is becoming more integrated with other discovery tools, the group will address the changing nature of research in the Web environment through the following actions:

  • Examine the relevance of current searching strategies
  • Explore potential options that might be applied to UF Library Web pages for our users
  • Encourage shared discovery and experimentation
  • Coordinate and lend support to ongoing projects and initiate ground-breaking projects
  • Engage UF users through open forums that offer play and experimentation opportunities

Through this shared experience, the Working Group will expose multiple means for initiating scholarly discovery online. Task Forces that invite additional membership from staff and students may be formed from the Working Group to fast track some innovative projects that make use of software technology, such as Gaming; Wikis; Blogs; Tagging; RSS feeds. The Working Group will collaborate with the Resource Navigation Committee and the Library Web Service Manager to promote projects on the Library Web pages. These groups will work together in monitoring usage and evaluating the utility of the products.

Members: The Library 2.0 Working Group consists of members from across division lines that have concern about the Library Web presence in the current and future social Web environment. As stated above, this group will work closely with the Resource Navigation Committee and the Library Web Service Manager coordinating and recommending implementations of Web developments. As projects are developed, the group will want to contact UF Student Government to solicit participation and support from graduate and undergraduate students.
